Student Visa
Why Choose Australia?
Australia’s combination of high educational standards, robust student protections, and outstanding quality of life make it an ideal destination for learners from across the world. With internationally respected qualifications, strong ties to industries, and ample support for international students, Australia is a springboard to global opportunities.
Studying in Australia offers more than just academic growth. As one of the most multicultural societies in the world, Australian cities provide a welcoming atmosphere where students can immerse themselves in diverse cultures, food, and traditions. The country’s natural beauty—from iconic beaches and reefs to the rugged Outback—invites exploration and adventure during breaks from study.
Australian student life also includes access to a range of part-time work opportunities (up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods, with unlimited work rights during holidays), providing valuable experience and helping with living costs.
Applying as an International Student
If you are considering studying in Australia as an international student, you will need to obtain a Student Visa (Subclass 500). This is a temporary visa that permits you to stay in Australia for a specified period while you complete your studies at an Australian educational institution.
Under the new simplified student visa framework (SSVF) the level of documentary evidence required in relation to financial and English language capacity is determined by the combined immigration risk of the prospective student’s education provider and country of citizenship.
Key Visa Requirements
- Enrolment in a CRICOS Course: You must be enrolled in a course that is registered with the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
- Genuine Student Requirement: This criteria is assessed in accordance with the Ministerial Direction No 106.
- Financial Capacity: You will need to provide evidence of sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs including welfare arrangements for all dependents included in the visa application
- English Language Proficiency: Meeting the minimum English language requirements for your intended course, unless exempt.
- Health Insurance: You are required to obtain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) to ensure access to medical care while in Australia, covering the entirety of your stay, unless exempt.
- Health and Character Checks: Applicants may be asked to undergo relevant medical examinations and provide police certificates to demonstrate good health and character.
Applying as a Student Guardian
If you intend to accompany a student who is under 18 years of age, you will have to apply for a Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590).
To be eligible as a student guardian, you generally need to be the student’s parent, a legal guardian, or a relative aged at least 21 years. You must demonstrate that you are able to provide suitable accommodation, welfare, and ongoing support for the student while they are in Australia. In addition to these requirements, you must satisfy the Genuine Student Requirement, demonstrate sufficient financial capacity to support both yourself and the student, and maintain appropriate health insurance (Overseas Student Health Cover, or OSHC) for the duration of your stay.
