Working Holiday in Australia

Dreaming of exploring the sunburnt landscapes of Australia while earning money and gaining new skills? The Working Holiday program offers a unique opportunity for young travelers from eligible countries to live, work, and study in Australia for up to one year (and in some cases, even longer). Whether you want to surf the pristine beaches, trek through the Outback, or experience vibrant city life in Sydney or Melbourne, the Working Holiday visa opens the door to a memorable journey.

What is the Working Holiday Visa?

The Working Holiday visa program is designed to encourage cultural exchange and closer ties between Australia and eligible countries. It allows young adults to holiday and work in Australia for up to twelve months, with the flexibility to supplement their travel funds through short-term employment. There are two main visa subclasses under this program: Subclass 417 and Subclass 462.

  • Subclass 417: Working Holiday Visa
  • Subclass 462: Work and Holiday Visa

Each subclass has its own list of eligible countries and specific requirements. While both allow visa holders to work and holiday, Subclass 462 also includes a formal education component.

Eligibility Criteria

Subclass 417: Working Holiday Visa

To apply for Subclass 417, you must:

  • Hold a passport from an eligible country
  • Be aged between 18 and 30 years inclusive (or up to 35 for some countries such as Canada, France, Ireland, and Denmark)
  • Have sufficient funds to support yourself (usually at least AUD $5,000 plus enough for a return ticket)
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Apply outside Australia for your first Working Holiday visa
Subclass 462: Work and Holiday Visa

To be eligible for Subclass 462, you must:

  • Hold a passport from a participating country
  • Be aged between 18 and 30 years inclusive
  • Meet education requirements (such as completion of at least two years of undergraduate university study, depending on your country)
  • Demonstrate functional English proficiency
  • Provide evidence of sufficient funds
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Apply outside Australia for your first Work and Holiday visa

Note: The list of eligible countries and criteria may change, so consult the official Department of Home Affairs website for up-to-date information before applying.

What Can You Do on a Working Holiday Visa?

The Working Holiday visa is surprisingly flexible. Holders can:

  • Work: You can do short-term and casual work to fund your travels. Popular jobs include hospitality, farm work, tourism, retail, and construction.
  • Study: You may study for up to three months (12 weeks) during your stay, making it possible to take English courses, vocational studies, or short-term programs.
  • Holiday: Explore Australia’s natural wonders, bustling cities, and laid-back coastal towns at your own pace.

Extending Your Working Holiday

If you complete certain types of regional work (such as farm or specified industries in rural Australia), you may be eligible to apply for a second or even third Working Holiday visa, allowing you to stay up to three years in total. This work must be completed in designated areas and meet specified duration requirements.
